Perry is a Chicago native who was birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. However, her parents did not want her to pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry claimed that she was too timid to perform in high school but began performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness caused Perry home to California and theater roles were readily available. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was staged in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she was a part-time character in ABC's political thriller Scandal that starred her father. That same year she appeared as a younger version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a younger version. She was cast in the role through an open audition despite having a connection to the character.
